The FAO estimates that 95% of our food is directly or indirectly produced in our soils. It also projects that by 2050, 30% of arable land will have eroded, largely due to monoculture practices and overuse of synthetic fertilizers. 

The world's population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050, and that food production will need to increase by 60% to meet the growing demand. However, arable land is a limited resource, and climate change is making it more difficult to produce food.
